SERMON: Purifying the House of God - How God Removes Sin to Restore His Holy Presence

Sermon Summary

This sermon addresses the central issue of hidden sin and compromise among God's people. Through the two night visions of Zechariah 5—the flying scroll and the woman in the ephah basket—God reveals that true spiritual restoration requires ethical purity and the absolute removal of evil. Believers are called to repent of personal dishonesty, embrace Christ's cleansing power, and walk in covenant integrity within their families, workplaces, and local churches.

Introduction

When the exiled Israelites returned to Jerusalem, they eagerly began rebuilding the physical walls of the temple, assuming that physical presence in the holy land guaranteed divine favor. Yet, physical reconstruction without moral transformation is a spiritual delusion. In daily life, we often clean the visible exterior of our lives while allowing hidden compromises, unjust gain, and broken promises to linger beneath the surface. Zechariah 5 confronts this dangerous disconnect by revealing that God is deeply concerned with the moral purity of His people. God does not merely want a temple built of stone; He demands a holy people cleansed from sin. As we explore these striking visions of divine judgment and sovereign removal, we are invited to inspect our own hearts and yield to God's purifying grace.

Main Scripture

Zechariah 5:1-11

Then again I lifted up my eyes and saw, and behold, a flying scroll. He said to me, “ What do you see? ” I answered, “ I see a flying scroll; its length is twenty cubits, and its width ten cubits.” Then he said to me, “ This is the curse that goes out over the surface of the whole land, for everyone who steals shall be cut off according to it on the one side; and everyone who swears falsely shall be cut off according to it on the other side. I will cause it to go out, ” says the LORD of Armies, “ and it will enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him who swears falsely by my name; and it will remain in the middle of his house, and will destroy it with its timber and its stones.” Then the angel who talked with me came forward and said to me, “ Lift up now your eyes and see what this is that is appearing.” I said, “ What is it? ” He said, “ This is the ephah basket that is appearing.” He said moreover, “ This is their appearance in all the land— and behold, a lead cover weighing one talent was lifted up — and there was a woman sitting in the middle of the ephah basket.” He said, “ This is Wickedness; ” and he threw her down into the middle of the ephah basket; and he threw the lead weight on its mouth. Then I lifted up my eyes and saw, and behold, there were two women; and the wind was in their wings. Now they had wings like the wings of a stork, and they lifted up the ephah basket between earth and the sky. Then I said to the angel who talked with me, “ Where are these carrying the ephah basket? ” He said to me, “ To build her a house in the land of Shinar. When it is prepared, she will be set there in her own place.”

Zechariah 5 is central to this sermon because it establishes that divine fellowship requires covenant holiness. The vision of the giant flying scroll demonstrates that God's holy law inspects every home and exposes secret deceit, while the vision of the ephah basket illustrates God's sovereign removal of systemic wickedness from among His people. Together, these visions reveal that God actively purges sin to preserve the spiritual integrity of His house.

Main Sermon Points

1. Expose Hidden Sin to Divine Truth

Zechariah 5:1-4

Then again I lifted up my eyes and saw, and behold, a flying scroll. He said to me, “ What do you see? ” I answered, “ I see a flying scroll; its length is twenty cubits, and its width ten cubits.” Then he said to me, “ This is the curse that goes out over the surface of the whole land, for everyone who steals shall be cut off according to it on the one side; and everyone who swears falsely shall be cut off according to it on the other side. I will cause it to go out, ” says the LORD of Armies, “ and it will enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him who swears falsely by my name; and it will remain in the middle of his house, and will destroy it with its timber and its stones.”

The flying scroll measures thirty feet by fifteen feet, matching the proportions of the temple porch, showing that God's sanctuary standards measure every private home. The scroll writes judgment against theft and false vows, proving that secret dishonesty destroys the sinner from within.

1 Peter 4:17

Peter reminds the Church that judgment begins at the house of God, reinforcing that God purges His own people before extending His Kingdom.

The scroll flies into the private dwelling, showing that God sees behind closed doors. No amount of religious activity can shield hidden corruption from God's holy law.

Believers must conduct an honest personal inventory, confess hidden financial dishonesty, repay unrighteous gain, and fulfill all solemn vows made before God and neighbor.

Quick Insights

  • God measures private homes by sanctuary standards.
  • Hidden sin eventually dismantles personal and family peace.
  • Authentic worship requires transparent personal integrity.

2. Allow God to Restrain Sin

Zechariah 5:5-8

Then the angel who talked with me came forward and said to me, “ Lift up now your eyes and see what this is that is appearing.” I said, “ What is it? ” He said, “ This is the ephah basket that is appearing.” He said moreover, “ This is their appearance in all the land— and behold, a lead cover weighing one talent was lifted up — and there was a woman sitting in the middle of the ephah basket.” He said, “ This is Wickedness; ” and he threw her down into the middle of the ephah basket; and he threw the lead weight on its mouth.

The ephah basket collects the full measure of human rebellion, while the heavy lead lid thrusts wickedness down, proving that God sovereignly limits and restrains evil.

2 Thessalonians 2:7

Paul speaks of God's active restraint over lawlessness, assuring believers that evil does not possess infinite liberty.

Wickedness may attempt to rise and spread, but God's sovereign hand seals it tight. God never allows evil to run unchecked among His covenant community.

When facing widespread cultural corruption or persistent temptation, believers should actively surrender their struggles to God, trusting Him to subdue sin's power in their daily lives.

Quick Insights

  • God establishes strict boundaries against the spread of evil.
  • Human sinfulness is always accountable to divine sovereignty.
  • Grace gives believers power over entrenched patterns of wickedness.

3. Banish Worldly Evil from the Church

Zechariah 5:9-11

Then I lifted up my eyes and saw, and behold, there were two women; and the wind was in their wings. Now they had wings like the wings of a stork, and they lifted up the ephah basket between earth and the sky. Then I said to the angel who talked with me, “ Where are these carrying the ephah basket? ” He said to me, “ To build her a house in the land of Shinar. When it is prepared, she will be set there in her own place.”

Winged agents carry the basket of wickedness away to Shinar, the ancient site of Babylon, illustrating that sin is expelled to its natural domain of rebellion far from God's holy dwelling.

Revelation 18:4

God calls His people to come out of Babylon so that they do not participate in her sins or receive her plagues.

Shinar represents worldly pride and opposition to God. God does not merely suppress sin; He completely removes its presence from His holy land.

Believers must decisively separate themselves from modern Babylons—greedy business practices, idolatrous entertainment, and ungodly compromises—maintaining a distinct Christian witness in society.

Quick Insights

  • Sin belongs in Babylon, not in the assembly of saints.
  • God completely removes the lingering pollution of wickedness.
  • Holy living requires intentional separation from corrupt systems.

Bottom Line

God demands complete spiritual and moral purity from His people, actively removing hidden deceit and banishing wickedness so that His presence can dwell among a holy community.

Memorable Quote

God does not merely renovate our lives; He removes the sin that corrupts His house.

Theological Point

The doctrine of divine sanctification teaches that God cleanses His covenant people, exposing personal sin and removing moral pollution to prepare them for His holy presence.

Prayer Guide

  • Pray for divine revelation of any hidden sin or compromise in our personal lives.
  • Ask God to grant true repentance and honesty in our business and daily speech.
  • Thank God for the ultimate cleansing power of Jesus Christ on the cross.
  • Seek God's help to maintain holy distinction from corrupt worldly influences.

Responding to God’s Word

In responding to God's Word in 'Purifying the House of God,' we must remember that our Lord Jesus Christ came to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Just as the flying scroll entered the house and exposed hidden deceit, Christ entered our world and bore the curse of the law on the cross. He was cut off so that we might be brought near. Through His shed blood and rising power, Jesus cleanses His Church, making us a holy temple for God's Spirit. Today, God calls every believer to turn away from hidden deceit, abandon the corrupt ways of Babylon, and walk in wholehearted obedience. Let us yield our lives to His purifying Spirit, trusting Him to keep us faultless until the day of His glorious return.
