Introduction
We live in a world marked by unpredictable storms, whether economic hardships, political instability, family crises, or personal losses. In the midst of turbulent times, it is easy to feel as though circumstances have spiralled completely out of control. We look at the news or examine our own struggles and ask where God is in the storm. Revelation 10 provides a breathtaking divine perspective that pierces through human panic. Positioned between intense judgment visions, this passage pulls back the curtain of heaven to show that God is not silent, passive, or defeated. Instead, the Sovereign Lord stands straddling both land and sea, holding every square inch of creation under His absolute authority. When we understand who holds the ultimate reign over our world, our fears give way to unwavering faith, patient endurance, and bold gospel conviction.
Main Scripture
Revelation 10:1-11
I saw a mighty angel coming down out of the sky, clothed with a cloud. A rainbow was on his head. His face was like the sun, and his feet like pillars of fire. He had in his hand a little open book. He set his right foot on the sea, and his left on the land. He cried with a loud voice, as a lion roars. When he cried, the seven thunders uttered their voices. When the seven thunders sounded, I was about to write; but I heard a voice from the sky saying, “ Seal up the things which the seven thunders said, and don’ t write them.” The angel whom I saw standing on the sea and on the land lifted up his right hand to the sky and swore by him who lives forever and ever, who created heaven and the things that are in it, the earth and the things that are in it, and the sea and the things that are in it, that there will no longer be delay, but in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he is about to sound, then the mystery of God is finished, as he declared to his servants the prophets. The voice which I heard from heaven, again speaking with me, said, “ Go, take the book which is open in the hand of the angel who stands on the sea and on the land.” I went to the angel, telling him to give me the little book. He said to me, “ Take it and eat it. It will make your stomach bitter, but in your mouth it will be as sweet as honey.” I took the little book out of the angel’s hand, and ate it. It was as sweet as honey in my mouth. When I had eaten it, my stomach was made bitter. They told me, “ You must prophesy again over many peoples, nations, languages, and kings.”
Revelation 10 serves as a crucial prophetic pause between the sixth and seventh trumpet judgments. As John witnesses divine judgments shaking the earth, God presents a colossal angel clothed in heavenly majesty, reflecting God's own glory, presence, and covenant faithfulness. The messenger places one foot on the roaring ocean and the other on dry land, claiming total territorial ownership on behalf of the Almighty Creator. This dramatic posture assures the suffering Church that no realm, whether terrestrial or maritime, lies outside God's control. Furthermore, the angel swears an oath that divine delay is drawing to a close and God's eternal plan will be brought to perfect completion. By commanding John to consume the open scroll, the text demonstrates that believers must fully absorb God's Word before proclaiming His truth to a needy world.
Main Sermon Points
1. Recognise God's Stance Over Every Storm
The majestic stance of the angel straddling both sea and land demonstrates God's total reign over every part of creation. The rainbow reminds us of God's enduring covenant mercy even during fiery trials.
Psalm 24:1
David confirms that the entire earth belongs to the Lord, affirming that no place or situation exists beyond the boundary of His sovereign care.
In ancient apocalyptic imagery, the sea represented chaos, danger, and hostile spiritual forces, while the land represented human stability. By placing one foot on the ocean and the other on the dry ground, God's messenger demonstrates that both chaotic trials and structured human societies are beneath the feet of the Lord.
When facing sudden crises in your workplace, health, or family, deliberately shift your focus from the size of your storm to the majesty of your God. Acknowledge His sovereign authority over your specific situation through praise and quiet trust rather than giving in to despair.
Quick Insights
- God holds absolute authority over both calm waters and roaring seas.
- Even in apocalyptic turbulence, divine mercy shines like a rainbow above the cloud.
- The stance of God's messenger proves that no place on earth is beyond His reach.
2. Trust God's Perfect Timing Without Delay
The angel whom I saw standing on the sea and on the land lifted up his right hand to the sky and swore by him who lives forever and ever, who created heaven and the things that are in it, the earth and the things that are in it, and the sea and the things that are in it, that there will no longer be delay, but in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he is about to sound, then the mystery of God is finished, as he declared to his servants the prophets.
The angel's solemn oath by the eternal Creator guarantees that God's plan is proceeding according to a flawless timetable. What human beings perceive as delay is actually God's patient grace.
Peter reminds believers that God is not slow regarding His promises, but is patient toward humanity, desiring that all should come to repentance.
The declaration that there will no longer be delay directly answers the longings of believers who suffer under injustice. Swearing by the eternal Creator establishes that the One who fashioned time itself is fully capable of bringing redemptive history to its righteous climax.
Stop measuring God's faithfulness by your personal clock. When answers to prayer seem postponed, anchor your heart in His unchangeable Character. Use waiting seasons in your career or ministry to cultivate patience, active faith, and steadfast hope.
Quick Insights
- God's divine delay is an exercise of mercy, not a sign of weakness.
- Every sovereign promise of God will reach its full and flawless completion.
- When human waiting ends, divine victory begins in absolute fullness.
3. Digest the Truth and Speak with Courage
John is commanded to swallow the scroll, tasting its sweet promises while feeling the bitterness of coming judgment. Believers must fully internalise God's Word before sharing it with others.
Ezekiel received an identical command to eat the prophetic scroll, illustrating that every true spokesman for God must be thoroughly saturated with Holy Scripture.
Eating the scroll symbolises a deep, personal digestion of Scripture. The Gospel is sweet because it brings salvation and eternal life, but bitter because it exposes human sin and announces divine judgment on unrepentance. Faithful discipleship requires embracing both aspects of divine truth.
Commit to daily, reflective reading of the Bible rather than superficial skimming. Allow God's Word to shape your choices, conviction, and speech so that you can courageously share the full truth of Christ with family, colleagues, and neighbours.
Quick Insights
- Believers must fully internalise God's Word before proclaiming it to others.
- Scripture brings sweet comfort to the faithful and bitter warning to the rebellious.
- Faithful witnessing requires sharing the full counsel of God without compromise.
Bottom Line
No matter how violently the storms of life rage around us, God stands sovereign over every land and sea, guaranteeing that His divine purposes will prevail in perfect time.

When the storms of life threaten to overwhelm you, remember that Jesus stands victorious over every wave and every inch of solid ground.

This passage highlights the divine doctrine of God's universal sovereignty and providence. God exercises supreme, absolute authority over both physical creation and human history, ensuring that His redemptive plan moves unerringly toward its final, glorious consummation in Jesus Christ.
