SERMON: Three Reversals of Divine Providence - Discover how God turns human schemes upside down in His timing.

Sermon Summary

This sermon addresses the anxiety of feeling forgotten when doing good and facing opposition. Through Esther 6, it teaches that God invisibly governs history to fulfill His covenant promises, reversing human pride and overlooked faithfulness in His perfect timing. Believers are called to trust God's unseen hand, maintain integrity in obscurity, and rest in Christ's ultimate victory.

Introduction

Have you ever faithfully done what was right, only to be completely overlooked while those with selfish motives seemed to prosper? It is easy to feel forgotten when your Quiet integrity goes unrewarded and opposition mounts around you. We often measure God's activity by immediate outcomes, but scripture reveals a heavenly Father who is working behind the scenes long before we see the results. In ancient Persia, a sleepless monarch and an arrogant court official were entirely unaware that their actions were being guided by a higher authority. In a single twelve-hour period, God altered the course of an entire empire without performing a single visible split of the sea. Today we look at three powerful reversals of divine providence that show how God lifts up the humble, exposes pride, and secures His people.

Main Scripture

Esther 6:1-14

On that night, the king couldn’t sleep. He commanded the book of records of the chronicles to be brought, and they were read to the king. It was found written that Mordecai had told of Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king ’s eunuchs, who were doorkeepers, who had tried to lay hands on the King Ahasuerus. The king said, “ What honor and dignity has been given to Mordecai for this? ” Then the king ’s servants who attended him said, “ Nothing has been done for him.” The king said, “ Who is in the court? ” Now Haman had come into the outer court of the king ’s house, to speak to the king about hanging Mordecai on the gallows that he had prepared for him. The king ’s servants said to him, “ Behold, Haman stands in the court.” The king said, “Let him come in.” So Haman came in. The king said to him, “ What shall be done to the man whom the king delights to honor? ” Now Haman said in his heart, “ Who would the king delight to honor more than myself? ” Haman said to the king, “ For the man whom the king delights to honor, let royal clothing be brought which the king uses to wear, and the horse that the king rides on, and on the head of which a royal crown is set. Let the clothing and the horse be delivered to the hand of one of the king ’s most noble princes, that they may array the man whom the king delights to honor with them, and have him ride on horseback through the city square, and proclaim before him, ‘ Thus it shall be done to the man whom the king delights to honor! ’” Then the king said to Haman, “ Hurry and take the clothing and the horse, as you have said, and do this for Mordecai the Jew, who sits at the king ’s gate. Let nothing fail of all that you have spoken.” Then Haman took the clothing and the horse, and arrayed Mordecai, and had him ride through the city square, and proclaimed before him, “ Thus it shall be done to the man whom the king delights to honor! ” Mordecai came back to the king ’s gate, but Haman hurried to his house, mourning and having his head covered. Haman recounted to Zeresh his wife and all his friends everything that had happened to him. Then his wise men and Zeresh his wife said to him, “ If Mordecai, before whom you have begun to fall, is of Jewish descent, you will not prevail against him, but you will surely fall before him.” While they were yet talking with him, the king ’s eunuchs came, and hurried to bring Haman to the banquet that Esther had prepared.

Esther 6 serves as the dramatic turning point of the entire book. Up to this moment, Haman's plot to annihilate the Jewish people seemed unstoppable, and Mordecai's past loyalty to King Ahasuerus remained unrewarded. By initiating royal insomnia on the exact night before Haman planned to execute Mordecai, God exposed human weakness and initiated a chain reaction of divine reversals. This passage reveals that God's providence operates quietly yet flawlessly, turning human evil on its head to protect His covenant line and glorify His name.

Main Sermon Points

1. God Reverses Forgotten Loyalty into Timely Remembrance

Esther 6:1-3

On that night, the king couldn’t sleep. He commanded the book of records of the chronicles to be brought, and they were read to the king. It was found written that Mordecai had told of Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king ’s eunuchs, who were doorkeepers, who had tried to lay hands on the King Ahasuerus. The king said, “ What honor and dignity has been given to Mordecai for this? ” Then the king ’s servants who attended him said, “ Nothing has been done for him.”

God used the king's natural insomnia and a random reading of historical records to highlight Mordecai's unrewarded act of saving the king's life. What appeared to be forgotten by men was precisely timed by God.

Hebrews 6:10

This passage assures believers that God is not unjust to forget their work and labor of love shown toward His name.

In Persian royal culture, failing to reward a benefactor was considered a grave breach of honor, yet Mordecai waited silently at the king's gate without demanding recognition. Divine providence withheld human reward until the exact moment when Mordecai's life and the fate of his nation depended on royal favor.

Continue serving faithfully at your workplace, church, and family even when your sacrifices go unnoticed. Avoid bitter striving for human praise, knowing that God keeps flawless records and will honor your faithfulness at the appointed time.

Quick Insights

  • God governs human details like insomnia to accomplish His divine will.
  • Delayed human recognition is often divine reservation for a greater purpose.
  • Faithful service done in obscurity is never forgotten by God.

2. God Reverses Arrogant Schemes into Righteous Exaltation

Esther 6:6

So Haman came in. The king said to him, “ What shall be done to the man whom the king delights to honor? ” Now Haman said in his heart, “ Who would the king delight to honor more than myself? ”

Haman's self-absorbed assumption trapped him into designing an extraordinary public honor that he was then ordered to bestow upon his worst enemy.

Proverbs 16:18

Scripture warns that pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall, a truth demonstrated in Haman's sudden humiliation.

Haman entered the court early in the morning to demand Mordecai's execution on a gallows he had just constructed. Instead, his own pride dictated the honor that he was forced to lavish upon Mordecai, leading him on horseback through the public square.

Examine your heart regularly for self-centered ambition and pride. Choose humility over self-promotion, trusting God to exalt you in His time rather than building your own platform at the expense of others.

Quick Insights

  • Self-exaltation blinds the heart to upcoming divine correction.
  • God turns the weapons of the enemy into instruments of blessing for the righteous.
  • True honor is given by God's grace, not grabbed through selfish ambition.

3. God Reverses Human Pride into Sovereign Victory

Esther 6:13

Haman recounted to Zeresh his wife and all his friends everything that had happened to him. Then his wise men and Zeresh his wife said to him, “ If Mordecai, before whom you have begun to fall, is of Jewish descent, you will not prevail against him, but you will surely fall before him.”

Even pagan observers recognized that opposing God's covenant people is a futile battle that leads to inescapable ruin.

Romans 8:31

Paul reinforces that if God is for us, no scheme or power can ultimately prevail against His redemptive purpose.

After publicly honoring Mordecai, Haman fled to his house mourning with covered head. His own family and advisors recognized that the tide of history had turned, foretelling his inevitable collapse before God's covenant heritage.

When facing daunting trials or institutional opposition, take courage in God's covenant faithfulness. Do not fear the threats of the proud, but stand firm knowing Christ has already defeated every power that opposes His kingdom.

Quick Insights

  • No human council can overcome the sovereign purpose of the Lord.
  • The enemy's momentum shatters when it collides with God's promises.
  • Quiet humble faith outlasts noisy worldly opposition.

Bottom Line

God's unseen providence quietly turns human pride upside down to exalt the humble and fulfill His unstoppable redemptive plan.

Memorable Quote

God never needs a miracle to change your situation when His providence can shift an empire in a single night.

Theological Point

The doctrine of Divine Providence teaches that God continuously upholds, directs, and governs all creatures and events, working through natural circumstances and human choices to accomplish His holy will.

Prayer Guide

  • Thank God for His unseen hand guiding every detail of your life.
  • Ask God to purge pride and self-seeking ambition from your heart.
  • Pray for patience to wait on God's perfect timing when feeling unappreciated.
  • Seek God's help to remain humble and faithful during seasons of unexpected elevation.

Responding to God’s Word

Returning to our theme, Three Reversals of Divine Providence, we see how the Lord transforms forgotten duty into timely remembrance, arrogant schemes into righteous exaltation, and human pride into sovereign victory. Mordecai walked back to the king's gate unchanged by public applause, while Haman rushed home ruined by his own pride. This dramatic turn in Susa points us directly to the Lord Jesus Christ. On the cross, Satan and human rulers thought they had scored their final triumph against God's anointed. Yet through the ultimate reversal of the resurrection, Jesus crushed the power of sin, disarmed principalities, and was exalted to the right hand of the Majesty on high. Today, if you are weary, overlooked, or facing relentless pressure, place your trust entirely in Christ. Obey Him faithfully, lay down your pride, and rest assured that the Sovereign King of Kings is actively working all things together for your good and His eternal glory.
