Ask for Wisdom

Daily Devotion — 20/09/2026

Wisdom, Prayer, Trust James 1:5 WEB
“But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.”
James 1:5 WEB

Understanding today’s Scripture

James writes to believers facing trials and scattering, reminding them that God is not distant in confusion. When understanding runs thin, God invites us to ask Him for wisdom. The phrase “gives to all liberally and without reproach” reveals a God who is generous and not shaming. He does not scold us for needing help; He delights to supply it. In the flow of James, wisdom is practical—how to respond to hardship, how to speak, how to live with integrity. Asking is not about earning; it is about trusting the Giver. The verse that follows calls for asking in faith, not being double-minded. God’s wisdom is steady, pure, and peaceable, guiding real decisions with heaven’s clarity.

Ask for Wisdom

We often want answers fast: the perfect plan, the risk-free path, the guaranteed outcome. James redirects us from frantic self-reliance to a simple posture—ask God. Wisdom is more than information; it is God’s understanding applied to today’s decisions. He promises to give it generously and without reproach.

What does asking look like?
- Come honestly. Name your need: a decision at work, a family tension, a financial crossroad, a health choice.
- Ask specifically. “Father, I need Your wisdom about this meeting,” or “Show me how to respond with grace and truth.”
- Open Scripture. God’s wisdom aligns with His Word—truthful, pure, peaceable, merciful, and sincere.
- Seek counsel. God often confirms wisdom through mature believers who are anchored in Scripture.
- Watch your heart. Wisdom will not contradict godly character; it produces humility, patience, and peace, even when the choice is hard.
- Take the next faithful step. Wisdom frequently unfolds as you obey the light you already have.

You may not receive every detail at once, but you will receive enough light for the next step. God will not shame you for asking. He invites you to ask again tomorrow. Where you feel stuck today, trade panic for prayerful dependence. The One who gave Solomon understanding delights to guide you too.

Pause and reflect

Where do you most need God’s wisdom today, and how will you ask Him specifically for it?

Hold on to this truth

You are not alone in your decisions—God gladly gives wisdom to all who ask.

Let us pray

Father, You give wisdom generously and without reproach. I bring my decisions and uncertainties to You. Teach me through Your Word, steady my heart, and align my motives with Yours. Grant me clarity to choose what honors You and courage to obey. In Jesus’ name, amen.

“In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Proverbs 3:6

Walk in Wisdom

Pause today, ask God plainly for wisdom, open His Word, and take the next faithful step He shows you. He will guide your path.
