Awakened by Grace

The road to Damascus was paved with righteous zeal, academic prestige, and violent hostility toward the early church. Saul of Tarsus rode out of Jerusalem carrying official arrest warrants, fully convinced that he was purging Israel of a dangerous heresy. He viewed the followers of Jesus as blasphemers threatening the purity of the covenant. In his mind, every arrest and vote for execution was an act of pure devotion to God.

Then came the flash of heavenly light. In the ancient world, sudden blinding brilliance signified divine intervention and the immediate presence of God. When Jesus declared, "Why persecutest thou me?", He revealed a profound theological reality: to harm His people is to strike at the body of Christ itself. Saul's sudden fall to the dirt was a catastrophic interruption, yet it was the kindest thing that could have ever happened to him. Being knocked off his high horse shattered his illusions of moral superiority. Only when he was brought low, blinded and helpless in the dust, was he finally positioned to truly see.

God often allows our self-constructed paths to hit a dead end so we can look up and discover His grace. When our ambitions crumble or our defenses fail, we discover that the voice speaking to us in the dark is not a voice of condemnation, but a voice calling us by name. He meets our hostility not with wrath, but with a radical invitation to surrender.

Surrendering to Christ means laying down the heavy armor of our self-justification. It means acknowledging that we cannot engineer our own redemption. As you face your own daily resistance and quiet stubbornness, remember that the Savior's light does not blind to destroy; it blinds to heal, clearing away our spiritual cataracts so we can walk forward in His magnificent grace.
